Kona One

Along Alii Drive near Kailua Pier, where the Kona coast is mostly lava shelf, Kona One is an oceanfront four-bedroom house meeting the sandy shoreline. It sits inside Kona Bay Estates, a guard-gated community where only eight homes have sand at the shoreline instead of rock. The house rises in levels around a central courtyard, and the pool sits beneath. A hammock hangs in the shade on the house side, with a pair of loungers beside it on the stone. Down at the waterline, the surf works the lava close enough to hear from the hammock. From December into April humpbacks travel this stretch of coast, and dolphins turn up offshore through the year, though never on a schedule. Courtyard and Pool The main living floor stands on white columns over a central courtyard, and the pool spreads beneath it in a freeform curve edged with lava rock. Shade from the rooms overhead keeps the water and the stone deck cooler than the lanai on the ocean side. Water spills into the pool over a stacked-stone wall, and an outdoor staircase drops from the upper level straight to the deck. Along the pool's edge, a long wooden table sits under cover with room for twelve. Living, Dining, and Kitchen In the main living room the glass walls slide fully open, and the floor carries straight out to the covered lanai with the ocean past the railing. Overhead, the ceiling steps up to a wood-paneled inset with a fan at its center. A curved sectional on the lanai faces west, where the sun drops into the water on clear evenings. The dining room sits right on the coastline, its table for eight framed by louvered shutters that fold back on the ocean side. Koa cabinetry runs through the kitchen, and the same wood carries into the bathrooms. A second sitting room with its own ocean view gives a group space to spread out. Nearby Kona Bay Estates is a guard-gated community of homes with direct shoreline access, close to the center of Kailua-Kona. Keiki Beach, a sandy, swimmable cove, is a short stroll away. Kailua Pier and the shops and restaurants along Alii Drive are close by, and a community park nearby has pickleball courts. This stretch of the Big Island's Kona coast is associated with the royal compound of King Kamehameha I. Kona International Airport (KOA) is north of town.
